SEO Fundamentals - Building Link Counts

Filed under: General — admin @ 2:08 am

There are many elements that go into search engine optimization and getting your site ranked. One of the fundamental steps is link building.

To understand link building, we need to step back in time a bit. Our story begins in the 1990s at Stanford. There, two young men met during a campus visit and started playing around with different ideas. A few years later, they started a search engine called BackRub.

BackRub was based on the idea that search engines could produce results that actually made sense for the people using them. It sounds obvious, but it was a revolutionary concept at the time. Regardless, this would be done by classifying some sites as more relevant than others. How so? Well, the two gents figured out that really good sites would be evidenced by the fact that other sites included links to them.

A classic example is the website of the IRS. Don’t cringe. It is actually a good site. It also appears high in the rankings for any tax search imaginable. Obviously, the IRS doesn’t pursue SEO, so why does the site rank high? The answer is because there are so many links pointing to it. There are millions of sites that have links pointing to the IRS site so people can get forms, read up on tax issues and so on. With so many links, BackRub interpreted the site as being extremely relevant on tax issues and ranked it highly across the board on tax issues.

This idea of using link counts to determine the relevancy of a site for ranking purposes was ground breaking. In fact, it made the two gents who came up with it extremely rich. Never heard of BackRub? Oh, they changed the name a few years ago. It is now called Google.

If you want your site to rank highly, the number of links pointing to it from other sites will be a factor. Every SEO company has a strategy for building them. Some trade links with other sites. Some publish articles. The method doesn’t so much matter as the fact it has to be done.

Internet Marketing Expert Matt Bacak’s Easy 3 Step Action Plan for Internet Success

Filed under: General — admin @ 2:56 pm

Internet Marketing Expert, Matt Bacak earned his first million online as an affiliate. In a recent interview with fellow Internet Marketing expert, Armand Morin, challenged Matt Bacak and asked him what he would do if lost everything and had to start all over again to make money online. So here’s Matt Bacak’s three step action plan for those starting an online business and selling a info-product with very little start-up cash.

Step 1: Set Up Your Website
Set up your web site with a compelling sales letter. If you hate copywriting then you can hire someone to write the sales copy for you from sites such as Elance, Rentacoder or Guru. Alternatively, there are some excellent sales letter software programs that you can choose from. In addition, you can also use these sites to find website builders as well.

Once you’ve written your sales letter you also should consider having an opt-in page so that you can start capturing the names of visitors to your website.

Step 2: Set Up Your Autoresponder Series
An autoresponder allows you to automate your communications with your customers and potential customers. You can re-purpose the copy for your sales letter by breaking it down into small components that focus on the benefits of your product.

Using this autoresponder series you can continue to promote your digital product to those who opt-in to your list but do not immediately purchase your product.

You can choose services such as Aweber or GetResponse to set up your autoresponders.

Step 3: Generate Traffic
Matt Bacak advises writing ten articles as quickly as you can and submitting them to key article directories. You can use your resource box to drive people back to your opt-in page.

Obviously, the more consistently you write the better your results from this traffic generation method. Here are three key advantages of using articles as a traffic generation strategy:

1. It’s can be done for free unless you choose to use a ghost writer.
2. Even if you choose to use a ghost writer costs can be quite low.
3. Article writing can have immediate, short-term and long-term benefits as, once published your articles are permanently in cyberspace and their reach can be far and wide.

Initially, you may want to just start out by submitting articles to a few strategic sites but to achieve a wider distribution you can use an Article Submission service such as Article Marketer which offer a low-cost, yet efficient service to distribute your articles to thousands of sites. They even offer a free service to 29 sites.

In addition to the website already mentioned sources of ghost writers or freelance writers include iFreelance and GetAFreelancer.

If you want to write your own articles but hate writing try speaking your articles. Some individuals find it much easier to talk into a microphone and this can be a relatively quick way to create articles. You simply get your audio recording transcribed and after, hopefully, minor editing you have a written article.

An advantage of this method is that you have both written and oral content and using both on your website or blog will increase access to your material. Just as you may not like writing; some people don’t like reading and prefer to use their hearing modality.

Search Engine Optimization is Expensive

Filed under: General — admin @ 8:57 am

After shopping around for a search engine optimization company, you may be a little confused about the price gaps between search engine optimization companyâ??s proposals. Here are a few clarifications.

Search engine optimization is becoming more necessary than ever for the web site owner. Having a web site and doing business online is all about expanding the exposure for your product, service, and content. The way to achieve a higher ranking is with relevant content, fresh content, and multiple links to your web site from other relevant web sites. Some proposals may look the same but why is there such a price gap?

Search engine optimization companies all have different business goals, regional expenses, and personnel costs. Therefore, each search engine optimization company will also have various prices. Obviously, a search engine optimization company paying downtown New York City rent will have to be charge a little more than a Tampa Florida search engine optimization company but then again, what is realistic?

It all comes down to service, quality, and results. Overpaying a search engine optimization company is like a online business selling a five dollar product and paying six dollars a click on Google Adwords to get people there. The proposed search engine optimization plan must be affordable for your business. Often times, search engine optimization companies will charge more for competitive terms because the amount of effort needed is much greater than less competitive terms.

Look at what is proposed. If all are showing you pretty much the same thing but one is charging twenty dollars a month and another is charging three hundred dollars a month, look for whatâ??s missing. Does the cheaper provider have available support? Are they simply telling you what needs to be done or are they performing the services themselves? If a company is charging two thousand dollars a month and another one is charging three hundred dollars a month, find out if the more expensive quote includes a dedicated representative. If the extra cost is for something like that, ask yourself if you really require a dedicated representative.

The easiest way to solve the search engine optimization price mystery is to simply ask. When talking to your list of search engine optimization companies, ask them why they are charging so much more (or less) than another bidding SEO company. If questioning a more expensive company, listen for â??snake oilâ? responses like â??proprietary processâ? or â??enhanced optimization techniquesâ?. Remember, optimization is made up completely of relevant content, fresh content, and relevant web sites linking to your web site. Another red flag is when the search engine optimization company says things like â??we have a special relationship with the search engines.â? Google and Yahoo detest such statements in there terms and both search engines freely allow anybody to submit a web site.

Search engine optimization isnâ??t about submission, its about the quality and popularity of the site that is being submitted.

Pay Per Action Takes Over Pay Per Click

Filed under: General — admin @ 3:09 am

This September Google officially introduced the new wave of SEM (Search Engine Marketing). There has been much said about this new feature known to Adwords users as the “conversion optimizer feature”. Previously Google have been using a straight forward Pay Per Click (PPC) system, which they themselves created. PPC ads, also known as sponsored links, are found on a search engine’s search results. For instance, when you go to google and type in San Diego Website Design, numerous sections of search results are on the screen. At the very top of the screen there is a map with business listing. This list is a service for those businesses that have accounts with Google. Below that is a list beginning with Appeal Media’s Listing (shameless plug!). These are known as organic listings. Advertisers can not pay to be listed organically. It is a very complex system which is based on parameters such as relevancy and popularity. On the right hand side of the screen are the sponsored links. Sponsored links (PPC) are not listings, but clever advertisements that are being paid for.

The Pay Per system works on keywords. Keywords are the words people actually type in the search engine to look, such as San Diego Website Design. This would technically be a keyword phrase; San Diego, Website, and Design. The advertisers will competitively bid on keywords with their competition. This type of advertising takes constant maintenance as the cost of keyword rise and rise. The magnanimous techies at Google saw the problems popping up, such as inflation, with the once golden PPC system and decided to evolve. Other problems noted are ad clutter and fraud. PPC is currently plagued with issues as it comes down from its peak. This situation had to be remedied for the sake of the discontented advertisers and anxious publishers. The solution is PPA.

PPA ( Pay Per Acquisition or Pay Per Action) is a new type of advertising online that is conversion specific and garnering global support from advertisers. As usual, Google has broken ground on this and is offering it to their current Adwords Advertisers as an option for their existing account. E-bay is also doing something similiar with their advertising. There are a lot of fancy words to explain something so simple. Broken down into layman’s terms it is not so daunting.

Showdown : PPA vs. PPC

* Pay Per Click advertisers pay per impression or click. (Not necessarily results driven)

* Pay Per Action advertisers pay only when an “actionable task” happens.

o An actionable task is something you want to get from your cutomers to benefit and/or grow your business. Google Adwords lists action options as purchase/sale, lead (new contact), sign-up (subscription), views of keypage, and ‘other’ (be creative).

* PPC rates based on keywords rate. Keyword rates have risen with the surge of online business competetion. And then you still have to rely on yourself for conversions!

* PPA rates are based on actions that directly benefit your business. Prices are not unreasonable for small to mid-size businesses.

* PPC cost risk is on the advertiser.

* PPA cost risk is on the ad publisher.

It would be highly beneficial as an advertiser to jump on the bandwagon with this latest and greatest care of Google. It is a rare thing for a publisher to put their money where their mouth is and garner the brunt of a possible loss. Iit is unlikely that a loss would happen for Google or Ebay with their quantum growth patterns. This is still a one of a kind opportunity for businesses to get the most bang for your buck and not to stress as much about return on investment.

3 Killer Ways to Make Money on the Internet Without a Website

Filed under: General — admin @ 9:38 pm

Making money on the internet is no longer the preserve of the IT geeks and computer ponytails - in fact you do not even have to know html, css, coding techniques or even have a website at all.

3 Ways to Make Money on the Internet - Without a Website

Not only do you not need a website but you don’t even need a product to make money on the net, however you do need to familiarise yourself with the following techniques and methods.

  1. Affiliate Marketing
  2. The concept is simple - you refer buyers to other peoples’ products for which you earn commission for every sale made.

But how do you do this without a website I hear you ask?

Well it does get a little bit involved but you really can make heaps of cash by doing this without getting your hands dirty.

    This is how it works…

    • You sign up with an affiliate network (for free) where you will have access to a selection of electronic products generally in the form of ebooks, for example
    • You then select a few of the products for which you think a demand exists and that will sell easily - a bit of research in this regard won’t go amiss as you don’t want to waste your time trying to market scammy products.
    • Promoting your products - you will need to get lots of adverts all over the internet promoting your chosen products.

Your ads, embedded with your affiliate code linking to the product’s sales page, will need to be expertly written and appealing to generate click thrus to your product’s landing page & hopefully sales will result

    • The Power of a PPC Campaign

Without doubt the best way to generate an instant flood of traffic directed to your chosen landing pages is with a PPC (Pay Per Click) Campaign.

This can be done with Google, Yahoo or any similar search engine.

Once you’ve set up your ppc campaign your ads will appear on dozens if not hundreds of appropriate websites that will be hopefully be clicked on and the visitor taken to the landing page where a sale will take place and commission earned by you.

This sounds simple enough but unfortunately a lot of money can be wasted by the inexperienced campaigner.

Read the full article at the link below to learn how you can use the power of a Google Adwords campaign to make a fortune online without a website

  3. Write and Publish Your Own Profitable eBook
  4. Ebooks are simply one of the best online business ideas that exist today and can be created for next to nothing and sell for almost 100% profit.

Think of it, most internet millionaires have their own works of art selling across the vastness of the internet by thousands of their affiliates for almost no effort at all.

I’m sure you would like to be in this enviable position but you aren’t crazy about writing and you wouldn’t know what to write about anyway I hear you say.

Well this is true for a lot of people but the truth is that anyone can write & create an ebook that will sell on the internet.

Click the link below for all the details and to find out how you can create your own ebook for profit

There’s also software that will walk you step-by-step through the entire process from creating to selling your first hugely profitable eBook in just minutes

  5. Provide Market Research Data for Cash
  6. The life blood of most companies is having up to date and accurate market statistics, ie they need to know how their products & services are performing against their competitors’ creations.

Without this they are dead in the water and are therefore willing to pay good money to consumers, ie normal people like us, for this type of information.

Furthermore they don’t only gather this information once a year or so, but need it continually updated as the market is forever changing and they know that they need to keep their finger on the pulse so as not to lose their competitive advantage.

How can you profit from this situation you ask?

Well you can approach companies individually and whilst you’ll probably get surveys to do you may not receive enough survey requests

to make it worth your while.

Ideally you would like to receive between 5 - 10 surveys a day that you can do quickly and get between $15 - $75 for each one completed.

To be able to get this kind of work (which is really easy to do and can be done at home or even at work in your spare time from your computer) you would probably have to sign up with a legitimate survey company that coordinates all the surveys from many companies and ensures you get plenty of paying surveys to do.

The problem with these survey companies is that there are many scammy ones that just fill your inbox with junk so you need to make sure that you sign up with a legitimate one.

Ways to Get High CTR, Low CPC and High ROI in PPC Advertising

Filed under: General — admin @ 3:54 pm

Among the traditional methods of advertising, the fastest growing way is internet advertising. PPC advertising is one of the most popular method of internet advertising. It is effective, cost effective, proven and affordable to every pocket. If you are desperate and frustrated with failures using PPC advertising, you must know that every successful marketer has his own share of failures. PPC advertising has the advantage of speed as the result comes almost instantly. It is ideal for generating leads, you can track the performance and can improve the campaigns by tweaking.

If you have a high CTR which is the percentage of clicks with the number of impressions, it will automatically reduce cost per click (CPC) in case of Google Adwords and if you have a good product to offer, you can get a high return on investment (ROI). It is desirable that you have a really good useful product to offer and the landing page is able to generate interest in the product. Normally PPC is used for generating leads and making visitors know about the product. The visitors may return back later to consider your product.

You need to build, customize and manage campaigns, however you must first read about PPC advertising otherwise it can be very expensive. Initially keep your daily budget less than $10. If you do not see any sale for 300 clicks, you must consider some other product. Whether to have large or small list of keywords depends on your objective. Normally you should go for more specific and targeted keywords which are cheaper than broad keywords. More keywords means more traffic, but we do not need just traffic, it has to be a good quality and targeted traffic.

In PPC advertising the first important step is keyword research. You can use any keyword tool like Yahoo’s overture, Google, MSN, keyword discovery etc. to get more related keywords. You can even try some keyword spy tools which can show your competitors’ keywords and ads. Initially use only searched keywords, not the content feature offered by some PPC programs. Minimize using broad keywords. Use more long tail keywords and ‘exact’ and ‘phrase’ match if available. If you are using few keywords- they should be long tailed, targeted, and bid should be such that the ad position comes to 1-4. Use of misspelled keywords can also be tried. If you need really cheap clicks, you can try some PPC like goclick.com who accept bids as low as $0.01. You must use quality ads following the guidelines of the PPC company, to increase CTR.

Why Is On Page SEO Important?

Filed under: General — admin @ 9:34 am

SEO has two separate and distinct focuses: On-page SEO and Off-page SEO.

On-page SEO is executed at the web site itself. Getting improved search engine placement begins with the website. The opening paragraph on each pages needs to be keyword rich without repeating the title of the page. Meta-descriptions and Meta-keywords are important, too. Updating these on a regular basis is essential.

Websites with a high search engine rank have a couple of things in common. First, they have feature pages and pages of relevant content. This means if you are selling accounting services, you should have a lot of articles about accounting, taxes, and bookkeeping on your site with updated links. These articles should be key word rich and designed to capture the attention of Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, AOL and other major search engines. The more keywords you have, the better your search engine rank. Another characteristic of successful websites is the number of inbound and outbound links they have to and from other sites. When other websites link to yours and when you link to others, it makes your website appear more important, significant, and genuine.

By adding articles to your website on a regular basis, you boost your rankings. The web crawlers and bots will see the changes and give your site a higher ranking because frequent changes means you care about your site and are willing to spend time changing it and adding to it.

Why is a high ranking important?

A high search engine ranking means you are on the first few result pages of a search engine. Most people, when they are looking for something on the web, rarely go beyond the third page. The first page is the most sought after spot, but there are only ten slots available for each of your keywords. There are millions of websites hoping for the number one position on a page, so it takes work and persistence to attain Page One ranking.

If you are an ecommerce site, it is even more important to have high rankings. You want people to find your site first. Even with a physical store location, a wise business person will sell his or her items on a website. You will be able to reach more potential buyers in a much wider area than if you use just direct mail or catalogs. Setting up a website is just the first step. Next, you will want to get traffic to your site and this means a high page ranking. A high page ranking is achieved by diligent Search Engine Optimization.

At this point, you may be thinking that only companies with a large marketing department are able to achieve high search engine rankings for their websites. That is not always the case. Because high search engine rank is so critical to web-based businesses these days, there are a lot of companies that specialize in getting you the best placement possible. These companies can provide you with original, targeted content for your site, and submit your URL to Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other engines for consideration.

Effective Marketing For Events - 7 Steps To Maximizing Your Budget

Filed under: General — admin @ 3:10 am

Promoting large events is one of the purest of forms of marketing. Timing is crucial, your event is happening on a specific date so you need to get it right first time and your results walk through the gates. Any mistakes are painfully clear. But it is the high profile nature of these events that provides the opportunity to implement a hugely efficient campaign. This allows you to maximize your budget using the multiplier effect. The high profile nature of events makes them attractive to the media. They want you to advertise with them as they will get the halo effect from your profile.

This article intends to show how you can get the most out of your eventâ??s marketing budget.

Link ad spend to editorial
Itâ??s a time when you have the power in the relationship with any publication. Make sure that you use he time before you commit to maximise the amount of editorial each publication offers. It is amazing how much attention you get when you have an advertising budget! Most providers of advertising media will be happy to offer matching space or time. One useful tool is the use of competitions.

Advertising providers are normally happy to run ticket competitions. Free tickets are a great tool to get more coverage at minimal cost.

Involve sponsors
Most events are seen as a great marketing tool for potential sponsors offering both customer entertainment and market profile. But most exhibition organisers donâ??t use the promotional opportunities that working with a big company can provide. Most will have fantastic client data which can be used, staff to be targeted, advertising which can be piggy backed or instore/office promotions opportunities.

Use exhibitors promotional budget
With an event where exhibitors make up a large percentage of the content using their budgets can be a great addition to your promotions. You can enhance this by providing them with proforma PR stories and usable versions of your event identity. Exhibitors are a great source of competition prizes.

Get a media sponsor
Media sponsorship packages make your budget go further. The cooler your event the more the media will want to be involved. Offering key suppliers the opportunity to have media sponsor status is free for you â?” often only requiring the partners logo to be featured on ads, tickets and websites â?” but will give you access to free advertising.

Use the local press
With a national event local press can be very keen to be involved. They enjoy he cache of being involved with a big event and like to give their readers benefits. Competitions are therefore an inexpensive way for you to get profile across a region. Competitions can be designed to get over the unique nature of your event. Entrants can be encouraged to find out more about your event through editorial or on your website.

Target features journalists
Most events organisers perceive their event as being hugely newsworthy and think that you should be able to get them into the press easily. However, even if the event is seen as being of importance the reality is that your press overage may we be limited to a launch, a pre event profile and a post event round up. If your event is regional the coverage may well be limited to the local area.

One way around this is to target features rather than news editors. This may require a little thinking out of the box. An ecology event will obviously target environment writers but if the event is exhibiting green vehicles then target the motors writer and what about the food, gardening and lifestyle writers. Features tend to give you more and higher quality coverage.

Collect data for your next event
It never ceases to amaze that most events donâ??t collect data from their visitors. Simply collecting email addresses gives you a great tool for using to market for free.

Data can be collected during the ordering process, from quizzes and competitions, from exhibitors or from kiosks onsite.

Over a few events a significant amount of data can be collected.

By thinking around the campaign, broadening those involved, working with suppliers as partners and using exhibitors and sponsors budgets to broaden the campaign can effectively multiply the value and reach of your promotions. And bring more visitors trough the door? Why not try these tips and see?

Your New Year’s Resolution - Get Web Site Updated

Filed under: General — admin @ 9:32 pm

From a business perspective, the start of the New Year often generates excitement over being able to make a fresh start, with a new budget and a new set of goals.

Don’t forget to add to your list of New Year’s resolutions a commitment to review and update your web site so that it can contribute to your success strategy for 2008.

Check these areas to make sure they are still accurate:

  1. Corporate address, email address and phone number
  2. Product information and list of services
  3. Any references to staff members or email addresses
  4. Facilities and equipment lists
  5. Images - look for old facilities, discontinued products and former employees
  6. Tagline or motto
  7. Contact form - are the qualifying questions still pertinent?
  8. Submit the form. Does it go to the right person?

Other areas that might need attention:

Web Site Design

  1. Over time, the design can begin to look dated. Determine whether it’s time to freshen up the look and feel.
  2. If your design is several years old, it’s important to see whether it works properly in newer browsers that have been launched since the time you designed the site.
  3. Review the download time of your pages. If you’ve added flash elements or large graphics, it could bog down loading time, which will scare away some visitors with slower connection speeds.

Coding

  1. Check for programming errors or outdated programming.
  2. If you’re using CSS, verify that the site works on all browsers.
  3. Check Google and Yahoo to see how many of your pages have been indexed. If there are pages missing, it could indicate coding obstacles that prevent the search engines from indexing the site.
  4. Review your meta tags and make sure you have unique title, description and keyword tags on all your pages.
  5. Verify that all the navigation links on your site are working properly and go to active pages.

Content

  1. Realistically, if your company depends on the web site for lead generation, then regular attention should be paid to adding new content or updating existing content. Search engines are able to index a host of new content types that a few years ago wasn’t possible. That makes content like videos, images and PDFs much more valuable to your site.
  2. Update the site map. Make sure all the pages you want to be indexed and found are linked on the physical map on your web site as well as in your Google SiteMap.
  3. If you haven’t done much with your site in the last year or two, chances are it’s not performing as well on search engines as it could. Getting positioned on the search engines first and foremost is a function of how well the content on your matches search engine user searches. Update your content and add new content to make your site more relevant.

Search Engine Optimization

  1. Review your site’s position on major search engines for the primary keywords that site visitors would use to find your site. If your competitors are ahead of you or your site is not on the first 3 pages, it’s time to make some site changes to improve your position.
  2. Review the keywords that are used on your site to make sure they are still relevant to your business and that they focus on the terms most people would likely use to find your site.
  3. Do some research to determine whether the keywords you use on the site are the most popular terms by which searchers use to locate businesses like yours. Then compare that to how you’ve written your content and coded your meta tags. Add new content to focus on the most important keywords.
  4. If your links to strategic partners or other third-party sites, verify that the links on your site still work. At the same time, you should verify that sites that have made reciprocal link agreements with you are still honoring that commitment and that those links still work.
  5. Develop a plan to generate additional external links to your site.
  6. Consider how you might leverage content to increase traffic and links to your site. Look for opportunities to post articles or white papers on third-party sites with a link back to your site.

Miscellaneous

New sites, new technologies continue to enter the marketplace that can be used to further enhance the visibility of your site online. Take some time to investigate how your competitors are using social media to expand their visibility and consider whether your company can use it as well.

Similarly, the search engines continue to buy or build new features that can be put to use to make your site more prominent. Take a look at Google Base, Google Maps, videos through YouTube (now owned by Google), etc. Consider whether your site offers content that would be relevant for these types of searches.

The time spent to review and update will be well-spent. Even if you find there’s little to change right now, you’ll be assured that your site is still performing on the search engines and that site visitors can respond the way you intended.
